Dr. Haden A. Land, Hon. It is the willingness, and the trained ability, to think divergently — to ask what else might be true, before rushing toward the one right answer. That argument is the spine of his book, THINK TWICE: The Lost Half of Human Intelligence and How to Get It Back.

The drift toward purely convergent thinking, Dr. Land tells Myles, is not accidental — it is the predictable outcome of how professionals have been prepared for work. "We have been trained, through decades of education and early career experience, to operate in mostly controlled environments," he explains. Problems with clean definitions. Frameworks with known answers. Exams with a marking scheme.

That preparation served a purpose for most of the twentieth century, but it carries a hidden cost: it leaves people poorly equipped for problems that arrive without a definition at all. And in the AI era, those are precisely the problems that will matter most.

To explain why, Dr. Land draws on neuroscience. The Central Executive Network — a cluster of regions centred in the prefrontal cortex — activates when you are focusing, analysing, deciding, calculating, writing, and planning. It is the network we have spent decades strengthening, and it is the network that AI now replicates with greater speed and consistency than any human.

The network most professionals have let atrophy is different in character and, crucially, in location. The Default Mode Network is a widespread system that includes the prefrontal cortex but also the hippocampus, angular gyrus, cingulate cortex, and parietal lobule. It lights up not when you are focused, but when you are not — when you are resting, daydreaming, meditating, in REM sleep, or taking a relaxing walk. This is where imaginative, generative, divergent thought lives. And it is, Dr. Land argues, the half of human intelligence we have allowed to go quiet.

The strategic implication is stark: AI does not have a Default Mode Network and, in his view, may never have one. Helping readers identify and optimise that network is a central purpose of the book.

Dr. Land is not an AI pessimist. He sees the relationship between human and artificial intelligence shifting from a simple tool–user dynamic toward genuine collaborative partnership — each side amplifying what the other cannot do alone.

AI's strengths are well-defined: convergent thinking, processing vast datasets, identifying patterns, and executing repetitive tasks with high consistency. Human strengths occupy a different register: divergent thinking, emotional intelligence, moral reasoning, and the capacity to imagine things that do not yet exist.

The future, he tells Myles, is therefore less about humans versus AI and more about synergy — leveraging each side's strengths to solve complex problems, enhance productivity, and improve quality of life, while navigating the ethical and societal challenges that come with it. He points to healthcare, where AI will assist in diagnostics, personalised treatment plans, and drug discovery while humans contribute clinical judgement and empathy. And to education, where AI will tailor learning paths while teachers guide critical thinking and social skills.

Looking further ahead, Dr. Land introduces the concept of Artificial Human Intelligence (AHI) — systems designed to mirror human cognitive processes, drawing on neuroscience-inspired architectures to handle ambiguity and adapt to real-world context. These hybrid systems, he suggests, will combine human intuition with machine speed and pattern recognition, increasingly through brain-controlled interfaces.

Myles asks for a concrete example — a moment when slowing down to think twice produced a better outcome than reaching for the fastest, most obvious answer. Dr. Land offers two, drawn from opposite ends of experience.

The first is professional: an impromptu meeting in March 2012, at the President's Palace Chamber in Uzbekistan, following his presentation at the US–Uzbekistan 10th-year strategic partnership anniversary conference — an event that was nationally televised. The moment called for considered, in-the-moment judgement rather than a rehearsed response, and the discipline of pausing to think made the difference.

The second story is personal — and considerably more immediate in its stakes. It takes place on Marco Island, at Tiger Beach, just after the turn of the century, with family members nearby, an octopus, and a bull shark. The detail alone signals that thinking twice is not a luxury reserved for boardrooms.

For readers who want to put the book's ideas to work right away, Dr. Land points to two practical exercises, both rooted in planning.

The first is a structured approach to planning your work week — designed to introduce intentional switching between focused, analytical thinking and the more exploratory mode that most professionals never deliberately schedule.

The second is a discipline for assembling a career and life map — a longer-horizon exercise that treats a career not as a sequence of jobs to optimise but as a territory to explore, with destinations that may not yet be visible from where you stand today.

Both exercises, he notes, are fully laid out in the book for readers to apply the following morning.

When Myles asks what single mindset shift he hopes leaders will carry long after they finish reading, Dr. Land's answer is precise: the importance of developing and optimising the ability to both lead and manage — simultaneously, and with integrity, courage, dedication, passion, and empathy.

He distils the distinction cleanly: effective leaders ask what and why; trained managers ask how and when. Forward-thinking executives will be fluent in all four — knowing which question to ask, in which situation, and at which moment.

To deliver that fluency consistently, Dr. Land introduces a framework he created while living in the United Kingdom: VIPER, an acronym for Vision, Influence, Process, Execution, and Responsibility. Leadership, in his model, calls primarily on vision and influence; management calls on process and execution. The highest-performing executives take responsibility for all four, deploying each in the right situation at the right time.

It is the framework through which he led organisations for nearly twenty years — from teams of 12 to organisations of 7,500. VIPER is detailed in Chapter 13 of THINK TWICE, alongside a complementary measurement tool built around four components — goal, focus, approach, and success metric — with both qualitative and quantitative outcomes.

The throughline across every chapter, and across this conversation, is the same: the skills that carried professionals to this point will not, by themselves, carry them through what comes next. Reclaiming the imaginative half of human intelligence is not a soft-skills exercise. In Dr. Land's framing, it is a strategic imperative — and it begins with the decision to think twice.
